The calamity is one of the deadliest wildfires in US history. The fast-moving fires erupted overnight and were fueled by the winds of a distant cyclone. It advanced so quickly that several inhabitants ran into the water to escape the flames and smoke. Crews are still battling the fires that have engulfed various areas, including the historic town of Lahaina.

The fires appear to have burned first in vegetation and then rapidly spread into populated areas as wind gusts of over 60mph rocked the island. The conflagration swept into coastal Lahaina with alarming speed and ferocity, blazing through intersections. It leapt across wooden buildings in a town center that dates to the 1700s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Charity vs. Justice…what would Mike Davis have said about the tragedy of the Maui wildfires? That they were as avoidable as the ones in Malibu? Perhaps. Upland wildfires are normal in both locations. What's "changed?" https://t.co/VUgyIWCO9z
