Tingo Inc, an agri-fintech company, has commenced operations in Ghana with the soft launch of its local branch, Tingo Mobile Ghana.
Tingo Mobile Ghana was launched Wednesday, November 9th 2022 at the company’s offices in East Legon.
Tingo is an Agri-Fintech company offering a comprehensive platform service through use of smartphones (using GSM technology) to empower a marketplace to enable subscribers/farmers within and outside of the agricultural sector to manage their commercial activities of growing and selling their production to market participants both domestically and internationally.
Said Rory Bowen, Tingo Inc Chief of Staff: “We support 10 million farmers [in Nigeria] with access to technology and marketplace with a focus on social upliftment, financial inclusion and wealth creation. We are excited to launch in Ghana the same product and we’re looking forward to a very exciting few years ahead to build a business here.”
Said Dr Chris Cleverly, Tingo Inc President: “The seed that is agriculture in Ghana and West Africa and Africa itself is starting to grow. It’s growing because it’s being nurtured by companies like us. Fintech companies that are creating efficiencies in the way that we put our trees and our plants and our crops together…That’s the way forward for us, to actually link together technology and agriculture into a seamless partnership… The hero of our story is the farmer, you protect the farmer, the farmer protects you. Food security is national security, national security is international security,”
Tingo Inc aims to be Africa’s leading Agri-Fintech company that transforms rural farming communities to connect through its proprietary platform to meet their complete needs from inputs, agronomy, off take and marketplace which delivers sustainable income in an impactful way.
Speaking at the launch, Christian Mensah Sewordor, Director of partnership and membership at the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana, welcomed Tingo Inc to Ghana and called on them to deliver on their promises to help rural farmers reach their full potential.
“Our belief is one thing, let us grow to feed ourselves and let us grow to feed others. As we grow to feed ourselves, as we grow to feed others, we need the technology, we need the cash. We need the cash to purchase the inputs, to do the research and development which will inform whatever we are going to do to enhance the business of agriculture. Agriculture is the only sector that can employ the numerous youth that are unemployed.
“Tingo Mobile says they are here to give us the technology, they are here to give us the cash…what we need now is for you to partner us in terms of equity so that we can go into serious commercial farming because have the lands there, we have the labour there, but we don’t have the means to purchase those seeds, those input, those tractors and those threshers,” Mr Sewordor said.
